  • Professional Achievement Awards nominees must have a minimum of one year of rental housing experience.
  • ​Nominated individuals must work in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  
  • The individual must work for a MAA member company that is in good standing for at least one year prior to the nomination.
  • ​​Previous Professional Achievement Award winners are not eligible for entry in same category.  
  • Nominees may only be submitted in one category.

Award Category Details

​Supplier Person of the Year
  • This is an individual award based on professional achievement and personal contributions to the apartment industry. Many individuals in the supplier community have made significant "above and beyond" contributions to the apartment industry. Nominee must be an MAA member in good standing. 
  • ​Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included. For example, quarterly sales figures increased by 5% as a result of a unique marketing initiative.  
  • Provide evidence of nominee’s strategic thinking, commitment to customer service, and role as a team player. Consideration of how nominee adds value to the supplier community through service and dedication.  
  • Statements may include examples of how the nominee has done any of the following: taken the initiative in the work place, practiced innovation and problem-solving, acted as a mentor, made a significant contribution to their company, contributed to the community through volunteering and/or charitable giving, participation in any boards or committees, and participated in continuing education related to the profession.    

Apartment Maintenance Technician of the Year  
  • This award recognizes an onsite maintenance professional that has demonstrated outstanding efforts and contributions to their community.
  • Nominee must focus their work primarily on physical maintenance of one or more buildings or communities. “Maintenance Technician” title is not required; similar titles are acceptable. Nominee should not be a supervisor or manager.  
  • Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included. For example, utility costs were reduced by 5% as a result of a sustainability initiative.  
  • Provide evidence of nominee’s productivity, technical skills, commitment to customer service, and role as a team player. 
  • Statements may include examples of how the nominee has done any of the following: taken the initiative in the work place, practiced innovation and problem-solving, acted as a mentor, made a significant contribution to the property, contributed to the community through volunteering and/or charitable giving, participation in any boards or committees, and participated in continuing education related to the profession.   
 
Apartment Maintenance Supervisor of the Year  
  • This award recognizes a maintenance supervisor that has demonstrated outstanding efforts and contributions to their company and communities. Nominee must focus their work primarily on maintenance of one or more buildings or communities and managing at least one other technician. “Maintenance Supervisor” title is not required; related titles are acceptable.  
  • Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included. For example, utility costs were reduced by 5% as a result of a sustainability initiative. 
  • Provide evidence of nominee’s ability to implement maintenance cost controls, commitment to customer service, success in team building within maintenance/service department, and examples of leadership skills. 
  • Statements may include examples of how the nominee has done any of the following: taken the initiative in the work place, practiced innovation and problem-solving, acted as a mentor, made a significant contribution to the property, contributed to the community through volunteering and/or charitable giving, participation in any boards or committees, and participated in continuing education related to the profession.   
 
Rising Star of the Year 
  • This award strives to recognize a professional with fewer than 5 years of service who has made noteworthy contributions to his or her organization and the apartment industry at large. Rising Star Award nominees may be any level or job title within their organization, but their property management company must be MAA members in good standing.  
  • Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included. For example, this person made a record number of closings for this property in one month.
  • Provide an outline of NAA and MAA involvement and accomplishments, including committee participation and outline of activities related to advocacy on behalf of the apartment industry 
  • Provide an outline of any continuing education and/or professional credentials attained in the last 5 years.  
  • Statements may include examples of how the nominee has done any of the following: taken the initiative in the work place, practiced innovation and problem-solving, acted as a mentor, made a significant contribution to their property, contributed to the community through volunteering and/or charitable giving. 

Leasing Professional of the Year  
  • This award recognizes a leasing professional that has demonstrated outstanding efforts and contributions to their community. This individual must be an onsite leasing professional or Assistant Manager who has spent at least 80% of their time over the last 12 months performing leasing and marketing activities.  “Leasing Professional” title is not required; marketing and other related titles are acceptable.  
  • Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included. For example, closing rates for a specific property increased by 15%. 
  • Provide evidence of nominee’s effective closing skills, strategic thinking, commitment to customer service, and role as a team player. 
  • Statements may include examples of how the nominee has done any of the following: taken the initiative in the work place, practiced innovation and problem-solving, acted as a mentor, made a significant contribution to the property, contributed to the community through volunteering and/or charitable giving, participation in any boards or committees, and participated in continuing education related to the profession.   

On-Site Apartment Manager of the Year  
  • This award recognizes an apartment community manager that has demonstrated outstanding efforts and contributions to their community.  Nominee must focus their work primarily on on-site management of one 1 – 2 buildings or one campus. Nominee may manage other on-site staff. “On-Site Apartment Manager” title is not required; related titles are acceptable, including Senior Property manager.  
  • Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included. For example, resident satisfaction surveys improved 10% in the past year. 
  • Provide evidence of nominee’s ability to achieve financial goals of the property, commitment to customer service, success in team building with all site employees, and success in resident retention.  
  • Statements may include examples of how the nominee has done any of the following: taken the initiative in the work place, practiced innovation and problem-solving, acted as a mentor, made a significant contribution to the property, contributed to the community through volunteering and/or charitable giving, participation in any boards or committees, and participated in continuing education related to the profession.   

Independent Rental Owner of the Year
  • ​This award recognizes an independent rental owner and their importance to the rental housing industry. The recipient is a single individual who is the owner. Company or team submissions will not be accepted. ​
  • Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included.
  • Provide evidence of nominee’s ability to achieve financial goals of the property, commitment to property maintenance, preventative maintenance, and customer service. 
  • Provide an outline of NAA and MAA involvement and accomplishments, including committee participation and outline of activities related to advocacy on behalf of the apartment industry.​

Portfolio Manager or Supervisor of the Year 
  • This award recognizes an apartment portfolio manager or supervisor that has demonstrated outstanding efforts and contributions to their communities.  Nominee must focus their work primarily on management of 3 or more buildings or campuses and the staff working on them. “Portfolio Manager or Supervisor” title is not required; related titles are acceptable.  
  • Provide a summary of nominee’s job performance and professional accomplishments. Specific examples and statistics should be included. For example, resident renewals increased by 5% in the past year over this person's whole portfolio. 
  • Provide evidence of nominee’s ability to achieve financial goals, success in team building, leadership, and success in employee recruiting and retention. 
  • Statements may include examples of how the nominee has done any of the following: taken the initiative in the work place, practiced innovation and problem-solving, acted as a mentor, made a significant contribution to the property, contributed to the community through volunteering and/or charitable giving, participation in any boards or committees, and participated in continuing education related to the profession. ​
  • To be considered for the National Apartment Association Excellence Awards, you must be a Certified Apartment Portfolio Supervisor (CAPS).
